I went for a walk in Hamilton East Cemetery on the edge of Hamilton Gardens.
The cemetery was developed in the 1860s and is no longer operational.
At one point I was able to get a view of Mount Pirongia.
I was also able to check on the progress of the new bridge being built over the Waikato River.
I believe it is planned to open it sometime next month.
The cemetery was not as quiet as I expected. I met several other walkers and a caretaker was busy collecting piles of raked-up leaves.

My late husband's grandfather is buried there. He died in 1965 just past his 100th birthday, John Frederick Vercoe.
ReplyDeleteWow, that was a good age to live to. I was parked among mostly 1950s and 1960s burials, so was probably near by.
DeleteHe was out in the bush with a group of Maori when Tarawera erupted and everything went dark with ash everywhere. Maurice Smyth did an article on his observations.
DeleteLovely views from the cemetery, it looks very peaceful there. Is the bridge the Peacooke bridge which I found when I googled. From your picture it looks as though it might be a rail bridge as it seems to have gantry’s on it.
ReplyDeleteYes it is that bridge; it is a car and cyclist/pedestrian bridge built mostly to service the huge new Peacocke subdivision which is about to be built.
DeleteLooks to be a spot with fabulous views - interesting that you were not the only person there.
ReplyDeleteWe got the forecast -1 oC frost this morning, and are due a -2 oC frost in the morning... although it was sunny, it was not particularly warm. Not a good day for getting the washing dry.

We lived near Tokoroa for a year and that was so cold the ground remained frozen all winter. I'm happy that Hamilton is a little bit warmer than that!
DeleteI love that first view...and the one with Mount Pirongia...
ReplyDeleteImpressive new bridge. It sounds like a lovely place to walk.
ReplyDeleteI see the cemetery has many concrete vaults ...interesting.
ReplyDeleteWe had a frost this .morning and it was -10.8! (Tasmania, Australia)
ReplyDeleteLovely views to be seen from the cemetery. I've always found them to be peaceful places to walk. And interesting information on some of the very old markers.
