AFTER SOME GARDEN POTTERING I BEGAN SORTING THROUGH SOME OLD PAPERS AND FOUND THIS 1950s PAMPHLET (the name Chinese gooseberries was changed to Kiwifruit in 1959).
TODAY WE HAVE GREEN KIWIFRUIT, GOLD KIWIFRUIT AND RED KIWIFRUIT, AND THE OLD NAME HAS BEEN FORGOTTEN BY MOST PEOPLE.
TIMES CHANGE.
MARGARET xx
I'm old enough to remember them as Chines gooseberries even if us kids did call them Chinese goozegogs.
ReplyDeleteHaha, that name is gorgeous :))
DeleteI remember when they changed the name. I still think of them as Chinese gooseberries now and again. And now different varieties I've never heard of, let alone eaten
ReplyDeleteThey all still taste like kiwifruit to me, just different colours LOL
DeleteI didn't remember them being called Chinese Gooseberries but I must have heard the term from others because it was familiar when I saw it.
ReplyDeleteWe also used to call them Hairy Berries, but I don't think that was ever an official name!
DeleteI like the newer name! I’ve never had the red.
ReplyDeleteThe red ones are reasonably new on the market. And more expensive than the others! To me they taste the same, just a different colour.
DeleteYour herbs look great – do you dry some so you can use them throughout the winter? I love the old advertisement, I found one in the barn from about the same time advertising different types of corn seeds – really colorful and fun. Interesting how names are changed – I imagine that would be hard to get used to !
ReplyDeleteWe are very fortunate here with our temperate climate as it means I can use them fresh all year round. Their growth slows down a little, but no problems like you have to face.
DeleteThat's a nice healthy line-up of herbs.
ReplyDeleteI only showed you the best looking ones LOL
DeleteI sure did not know the old name...my daughter used to love them. I don't know if she still does or not.
ReplyDeleteI well remember the 'old' name... i tried a red Kiwifruit the other day and liked it - not so keen on the gold ones.
ReplyDeleteNothing quite like pottering in the garden of a morning!! Your herbs are looking very healthy Margaret
Blessings
