An Early Supermarket Visit

I was hoping to beat the heat this morning and so went to the supermarket rather early.  There was no need, as nearly all day we have had thick cloud cover and that has kept the temperatures much cooler than yesterday’s blistering heat.

It had still been a sticky night though, but keeping the fan going helped me sleep a bit better than the night before.  When the curtains were pulled back this morning, there was a visible layer of mist lying over the field behind us and a few wisps of fog twirling through the trees in the valley.

It seems that each time I visit a supermarket I go to a different one.  I have no loyalty, it seems, to any particular company or any particular location.

New World supermarket at Rototuna, Hamilton

Today I went to New World at Rototuna and found some kitchen sponges that seem to be going out of stock at other stores, being replaced with microfiber cloths.

From what I understand, microfiber is as bad as plastic for the environment as when it begins to break down the small fibres find their way into our oceans with the same devastating effect as plastics.  But I will not be too condemnatory as I actually have no idea at all what kitchen sponges are made of, or what harm they may do to our fragile world.

No other shopping was needed today, so it was home to put away the groceries and then spend some time admiring the new garden wall that son has been building.

Now I have my nose into another book.  I found a Georgette Heyer book, Black Sheep, in my bookcase that I haven’t read for several years.  I can still remember the gist of the story but the details are forgotten so I am quite enjoying it.

Margaret.

  2. The sponges are just as bad for the environment, we stopped using them ages ago and have gone back to using cotton cloths. I too have no loyality to any supermarket, with so many discount shops about, it's a good time for saving money as we shop in a different shop each time, getting the best prices on products we love.

    1. When I first married I used white cotton dishcloths and dishmops. Sadly, they have long disappeared from our supermarket shelves.

  3. I don't have a great allegiance to supermarkets and when you dig deep many are owned by the same conglomerate anyway, at least here in North America.

    1. All our big name supermarkets are owned by just two conglomerates. We really have no alternative to using them, however annoyingly manipulative they are.

  4. I always follow the bargains if I have the time when I am shopping. The savings are worth my time though I can see how a working person would find it difficult to shop around.

    1. I've found here that where there is only one supermarket they only promote the national specials for that chain. When two or more are close together, if one puts on an individual special then the others will follow suit. I think our supermarkets here hold their customers very much to ransom.

  5. When planning my grocery shopping trip I look at the sales flyers and go to the store that has the things I need on sale. Also, I'll take a competitor's flyer along and almost always I'll get the item for the sale price.

    1. That sounds to me like a good thrifty plan you have going there.

  6. I think it is good that you shop around! I don't have much choice in our little town. Which I would buy some stuff where I buy it even if there were half a dozen grocery store.

I love the photo in your header...love the cows on the hillside. Reminds me of where I grew up.

    1. It reminds me of my childhood home as well, as I grew up on a dairy farm.
