It is 33 years today since my maternal grandfather passed
peacefully away, two days after his ninetieth birthday. I can still remember his gentle placid
temperament and how his eyes would twinkle when he was playing a joke on his
grandchildren.
I have digital copies of some of his photos, taken on an old
Kodak Brownie camera (still in my possession!), so thought I might post a few
of them.
Unfortunately I have no idea who most of the people are in
his photos, or when they were taken (although I am guessing most were between
1910 and 1930).
My Grandfather. I wonder if these clothes were high fashion at the time? |
One of his first vehicles was a Douglas motorbike |
Families used to get together then, as they do now. |
These two women were obviously giving their dogs a wash. |
Picnics were a popular pastime. |
I loved these happy swimmers. |
Horses were in daily use on the orchard. |
Three young ladies, who may have perhaps been his sisters. |
I love looking through these old photos. If only they could talk!
Enjoy your day J
Margaret.

So much is lost through the generations. We should write on the backs of photos who is on them so our descendants know the information from our time.
ReplyDeleteI have done that to my photos, and also older photos where I know who the people are. Now everything seems to be digital I wonder how many photos will actually survive for future generations.
DeleteI like seeing old photos. Too bad no one thought to identify who the people were though.
ReplyDeleteI was given a photo of my maternal grandfather with some of his children only this week and there is a lady neither I, nor my cousin can identify. If only they were named. It is lovely looking back.
ReplyDeleteLovely old photos. Your grandfather looks grand. They did enjoy big picnics back then, didn't they. I have photos of my mother, friends and family at picnics too
ReplyDeleteSo frustrating not to know who's who in old photos. I've written on lots and labelled the ones in albums and get a few digital ones printed out, but nothing like the amount from the past.
ReplyDeleteOhhh, such treasures!
ReplyDeleteBet it was fashion those days, too!! :-)
Awww, really beautiful! Yes, if only they could talk!
I never met my Grandfathers, they passed long before I was born.
I have a FIL and he treats me like a child.
Beautiful pictures you have there! xx
One of the problems with old photos is that very often there is no annotation for future generations. I inherited hundreds and hundreds of old photos taken by my Uncle when abroad during the war with the RAF. None were annotated.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that I got my father to write on his war photos, but my grandfather's war photos have very little on them. There must be so many photos around that lose their potential historical value because nobody knows what (or who) they were of.
DeleteOh Margeret! Hoe beautiful these photos are! They look from a long time ago but the emotions I get are still so vivid! I love the first portrait of your grandfather! He reminds me of one of the characters from a series I have watched when I was a kid, Daddy Long Legs. He looks and dresses like the main guy there, Jervis Pendleton. And that last photo, these ladies look very beautiful in their dresses, I can see this blown up to a 20x30 feet canvass on a gallery!
ReplyDeleteI would like to thank you so much for joining Timesless Thursdays Margaret :) I really appreciate it especially it's its first run. Hope to see you again on the next episodes and these amazing and timeless memories :)
I have all of my mother's and grandmothers photos in my roof! Now I want to get them down and browse through them...your's are neat!
ReplyDeleteHello, wonderful memories and photos of your granddad and family. Take care and stay safe! Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteWhat a treasure! The old photos tell so much, even if you don't know names.
ReplyDeleteI so love these...so glad you have wonderful memories of your grandfather. So glad you shared them with us.
ReplyDeletewow so awesome finding these, very intriguing putting names to faces.
ReplyDeleteI have an old picture of my grandfather with a team of horses bringing in hay. He share-cropped land near where the La Brea Tar Pits (near Los Angeles) California, were being investigated for dinosaur bones. Now that land is all homes and businesses. - Margy
