Dunedin Railway Station is a magnificent structure worthy of
a visit if you are ever in the Otago city of Dunedin.
Dating back to 1906, the Station was built in the
Flemish-Renaissance style.
The white Oamaru limestone facings on black basalt rock give
a dramatic appearance, causing some people to liken the edifice to a
“gingerbread house.”
The inside of the building has a rather grandiose
appearance.
There are embellishments to be seen wherever one looks.
The floor is a mosaic of around 750,000 Royal Doulton
porcelain tiles, many being arranged to depict different railway scenes.
Although the railway still operates, the passenger terminal
is seldom busy.
There are lawn and gardens in the front of the Railway
Station, making a pleasant spot to wander and sit awhile.
I love visiting old buildings like this. The craftsmanship is often something to
marvel at.
Hope the week is going well for everyone,
Margaret J

What a handsome building with whimsical styling and a park to enjoy. I am glad the building is being well taken care of. I could imagine it as a setting in a novel of that time period.
ReplyDeleteIt would look great in a movie :)
DeleteI have only been to Dunedin once, in the late 1960's, but just passed through and did not see the Station.
ReplyDeleteThat is magnificent specially for a railway station.
ReplyDeleteAnother place I've yet to visit!! I can't wait for our South Island road trip.
ReplyDeleteI love that beautiful building, train stations are so interesting. There is a beautiful station in Valencia, Spain, we love it and have hundreds of photo's.
ReplyDeleteIt's a long time since I was in Dunedin. Being from Scotland I should have been used to the weather there but after my life in Hawkes Bay I struggled a bit.
ReplyDeleteIt can be a wee bit chilly there sometimes LOL
DeleteIt' truly a grand edifice! The mosaics are just amazing! Thanks for sharing your images.
ReplyDeleteYour link is a great addition to 'My Corner of the World' this week!
A lot of work obviously went into the mosaic floor, and it is great that it is (so far) standing the test of time.
DeleteThat´s very impressive architecture. I mean WOW!
ReplyDeleteIt really is a grand old structure.
ReplyDeleteWow, it is a beautiful rail station! Take care and have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI really love the arches with two toned blocks. I remember a documentary I once watched about Moorish Architectures in Southern Spain and how those arches were designed by the Moors to give remembrance to the palm trees of the middle east and northern africa where most of them came from :)
ReplyDeleteNow that is a very big WOW, so much love to detail, thank you for sharing this! Ixx
ReplyDeleteIt's imposing! Love the arches.
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday!
F's from Dunedin - she loved your photo from 'home'. It appeared at a very opportune time while we were bouncing around the blogosphere - she's been a bit homesick during all this lockdown stuff.
ReplyDeleteGlad I could help! I've stayed in Dunedin three times now - it is a lovely city :)
DeleteThat is just so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat railway station is gorgeous. I would love to wander round, and maybe take a ride on a train, wearing a dress from 1906.... it would be perfect!
ReplyDeleteOh, Margaret...this is so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteSuch an attractive looking building, well maintained too.
ReplyDeleteThat is the most impressive railway station I've ever seen. I love the old style of buildings, even ones not as magnificent as this one. Modern buildings do not as a rule impress me at all.
ReplyDeleteThat is a gorgeous building, Margaret! I love the train on the mosaic floor, and the interior looks more like a grand theatre rather than a railway station!
ReplyDeleteMargaret P
The building is definitely in the Old Grand Dame category! Each train picture on the floor was different, it was quite an amazing sight.
DeleteThat is a lovely building!
