Deconstructing An Apron

NO MATTER HOW CLOUDY A DAY IT IS, THE SUN ALWAYS SEEMS TO SNEAK UNDER THE CLOUDS AS IT RISES (like in this photo) AND AGAIN JUST AS IT SETS.
I HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING TO FIND APRONS TO BUY THAT ARE BIG ENOUGH FOR ME.
I AM NOT A GREAT SEWER, BUT MAKING MY OWN SEEMS TO BE THE MOST OBVIOUS SOLUTION.
MY FAVOURITE APRON HAS BEEN USED, WASHED, AND IRONED, INNUMERABLE TIMES AND THE FABRIC HAS FINALLY WORN THROUGH.
I'VE NOW UNPICKED IT ALL AND AM HOPING TO BE ABLE TO TAKE A PATTERN OFF IT.
I THINK I NEED TO FIND SOME THICK PAPER OR THIN CARDBOARD TO DO THAT.
AND THEN I'LL NEED TO FIND SOME SUITABLE FABRIC - UNLIKE MANY OF MY CRAFT-MINDED FRIENDS, I DON'T HAVE A FABRIC STASH I CAN TURN TO!

  1. Embrace the task, nothing beats homemade items, which are always a better fit and stronger.

  2. All the best Margaret - I have been known to do that too, when something I loved needed to be replaced.

  3. That's great that you're going to make a new one out of your old beloved Sagittarius...
Maybe you can find an old piece of clothing in your closet that you no longer wear and that matches the color and, above all, the fabric.
Anyway, the two colors you have now are very nice.
Good luck. It will be wonderful when you hold your new piece in your hand... I'm very excited about it.
    Viola wishes you happy sewing.

  4. Good luck with the apron. Made it measure is always best!

  5. Can’t wait to see it when you’re done, sounds like a terrific cool weather project! I am not a terrific seamstress, I simply don’t have the patience. I will say the easiest apron I’ve ever made was a simple rectangle, with the ends hemmed under, and a long length of fabric or ribbon stitched across the top. Maybe I’ll show it in a quick post to give you an idea – truly if I can do it you’ll be amazing!

  6. I hope sewing yourself an apron goes well. My sister sewed me a couple that are the one-piece cover-the-whole front of me kind and I have a couple of regular aprons that come from the thrift store. I like both kinds.

  7. Good on you!!
If I want to make a pattern I'm likely to use again, I use very thin Vylene (the interfacing stuff that;s like tissue paper). Years ago you could buy it with inch grids printed on it, but once I'd used my supply up I couldn't find any more, so ordinary interfacing does the trick. And I mark the grain line on it - often it doesn't matter, but it's easier if I'm uncertain. You're going to end up with a much better article than if you bought one, and much, much cheaper!!

  8. If I were there,I would help you. I love to make aprons. My mom always wore one. She did not want one with a bib..
