Autumn Is Coming

After a long hot summer, autumn is finally stirring.  Not that any trees are changing colour yet, but the nights are a little cooler and we frequently have dew on the lawn in the morning.

The heat in the sun is not quite as intense and the cats and the rats are both quite happy to sit and warm themselves in it.  When they begin growing thicker fur, we will know the season is definitely changing.

This morning was cool and very still and I was not surprised to see a hot air balloon floating in the clouds above us.  There is something fascinating about this basic form of flight, and it never fails to give me a thrill to see them pass by.

I have a new header photo for this month.  It is one I took a few years ago when visiting Tikitere (usually called Hell’s Gate) near Rotorua.

This very active geothermal area is a little daunting to visit, with things erupting and making unusual noises, but extremely interesting nevertheless.  It is well worth a visit if you are ever in the area.

Cheers,

Margaret 😊

  2. Yes, autumn is here and it is a lot darker in the mornings now. I do not like going to the Growers' Market in the dark and will be pleased when daylight saving ends

  3. Love your Tikitere photo Margaret - that is impressive. Yes, we are definitely feeling the cooler nights down here, and also noticing the shorter days too.
    Stay safe

  4. I would never dare to enter such a balloon. But they look pretty from the ground to see, and we have a mobile of them in the kitchen.
Hell´s Gate, oh, I´d love to see and hear that!

  10. Oh autumn is my favorite month! So glad for you, sounds like it's been a very hot summer ther. We're just switching to spring...it was 17 degrees Friday morning, and then 74 degrees yesterday afternoon! We'll still have some chilly days, and I'm good until about June when the heat and humidity begin...July and August are the worst. For me that is, some folks love the heat of summer. Enjoy your cooler days! Mary

  11. Here on the other side it must be time for F to get her bike out in the mornings again. It is beginning to get light at breakfast time. Your steamy photo looks great.

  12. Nice new header. Your Hell's Gate reminds me of Yellowstone National Park with its geysers and boiling mud pots.

  13. I suppose you are getting ready for Fall and Winter. Spring seems far off here:( Lots of snow.

  14. I don't think we visited Hell's Gate when we were there, I think it cost a bit more than we wanted to pay so we went elsewhere in Rotorua to see bubbling mud pools. Next time you are in that town try the Wai-o-tapu pools just out of town.

    1. Yes, I have been there as well. I lost my best sunhat there and had to watch as it slowly sunk to the bottom of a hot pool. I was devastated!
Kuirau Park is a good place to visit on a budget (it's free!) and even has a place to paddle your feet in the hot spring water. I have often taken visitors there over the years.

  15. It looks like a very interesting place to visit! Great picture. It sounds like it is common to see hot air balloons, I have never seen any in real life! I would be thrilled to see one :)
