I had the good fortune this last week to win an online auction for a Zwilling J.A. Henckels meat carving set made in Germany.
When I married, we were given a boxed carving
set (knife, fork and steel) for a wedding present and used it for many years.
Over time, however, the box disappeared, the knife blade
separated from its handle, and all that is left is a steel and fork buried in the
bottom of a drawer.
Now I am getting rid of a lot of these things I no longer
use, I decided to replace what I wanted with something that had some quality.
I loved this set as there is a gold embossed hunting scene
on one side of the knife blade, and the box itself has another scene on the
inside of the lid. The handles are
apparently made with antelope horn.
I did some research and Zwilling J.A. Henckels is one of the
leading knife manufacturers in the world, which made my purchase feel even more
special.
I have no idea how old the set is, and the lady I bought it
off did not know either, but this will not stop me from the enjoyment of using
it.
“A knife is only as good as the one who wields it”
Have a happy day 😊
Margaret.
Wow that is a beautiful set!
ReplyDeleteGood for you!!!!!
ReplyDeleteA sharp knife is worth its weight in gold. Non sharp ones make life more difficult.
And with wood carving, a sharp knife is safer.
Good for you!!!!
Am chuckling reading your post. I had an identical set when I was a young married mum. Circa late 1960s. Minus the fab box.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful set!
ReplyDeleteI have a similar one that we bought with wedding present money, 30 odd years ago. No gold work. Just deer antler handles.
We bought a similar set for our son when he set up his home.
Enjoy it.
Our Zwilling knives are good value and easy to keep sharpened. We recommend them!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely your knife set looks!! The box itself is a work of art and the embossed hunting scene on the knife blade is unique. I've never seen any knife like it.
ReplyDeleteIt is a fine looking set and I hope the knife is sharp enough. I usually buy knives with a full length tang riveted into the handle, so they never come loose.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and something to pass on in time.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awesome auction win Margaret - I hope you get many years of use from this fabulous set!
ReplyDeleteStay safe
Blessings
Maxine
And we in Germany have a set from Japan - weird, huh?
ReplyDeleteHave fun with it, and be careful, Ingo really just 15 minutes ago sharpened our knives.
I'm not good with knives, we have a butchers set on the wall, high enough from small hands and mine, when we bring meat into the house, we often freeze it, so hubby prepares it so when defrosted it's ready to use, keeping me safe with all my fingers.
ReplyDeleteThat sure is a beautiful set! Congratulations on winning it.
ReplyDeleteAs far as I know Henckels is now made in China (like everything else it seems), and the quality has deteriorated. If you have managed to acquire a set of the German made knives then I think you have as good a set as was ever made. Since we no longer eat red meat, in fact eat little meat at all, a good carving set would be of no use in our household.
ReplyDeleteOn the blade it says "Zwilling J.A. Henckels Solingen Germany." Solingen is famous for the high standard of its cutlery, so I may be in luck with the real thing :)
DeleteWhat a wonderful set! My mother used to have fancy cutlery in the cupboards and we never used them! IT seems a shame that something so pretty and unique would get such little use. ( Or NONE! ) I understand if you want to use them for special occasions and there are simply not enough special occasions to dig them out. But I believe that a set of tools like this should be used! And they WANT to be used... Even if they dull and slowly devalue their worth over time. We have a set of Japanese Shun knives and use them for everything. Sandwiches, produce, fruit, and even the occasional plastic bag. I know they are meant for fancy Sushi, ( and we use them for that as well.) But I think they enjoy being the knife of choice when a sharp object is required. May your new knife set have a long life and many fond memories!
ReplyDeleteThankyou for that wish. I had the pleasure of using the knife last night and loved it!
DeleteAn elderly lady once told me the only thing she regretted in her life was not using all the beautiful china she had stored away for a 'special occasion.' When a special occasion occurred, there were too many people present and she was afraid something would get broken. Since then, I have made a point of using all my 'pretty things,' even if it is only occasionally :)
Thad carving set looks wonderful... I wonder how old it is. It wouldn't be much use for me as I hardly ever have the need for a set like that. Enjoy it.... and don't cut yoiurself!
ReplyDeleteThat's a top quality steel, therefore it will keep its edge - you have done well. I see you've changed your Header photo - that's one of the Rotorua pools, isn't it? But I have no idea which one. We explored the Taupo - Rotorua area on our honeymoon (we were married 46 years ago today!) but we've only ventured back a few times since then, and always with overseas guests, so we've been more concerned for their enjoyment than for our own. Perhaps it's time to do it again, just for us.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy using your knife set.
Yes, Virginia, the photo is one taken when we visited Hell's Gate (Tikitere) a few years ago. Congratulations on your wedding anniversary! I hope you are both having a lovely day together :) xx
DeleteThanks Margaret. Yes, we had a good day, although we didn't risk a restaurant meal, which we would usually end our day with. Instead I did slow-cooked lamb shanks, and they were delicious... as good as anything we could have got out. However, I do feel for the restauranteurs who are doing it hard at the moment. I'm not sure what Hamilton's like, but Karori (Wellington) is very quiet, with fewer cars on the roads over the weekend, and our local cafe doing more TakeAways and fewer seated inside.
