Autumnal Equinox 2022

About 4.30am tomorrow morning (Monday 21 March) will be the Autumn Equinox, when day and night become approximately of equal length.

For the first time in weeks, today we are having rain showers.  Yay!  Temperatures are finally dropping as well, which makes it so much easier to sleep at nights although no doubt I will soon be complaining the nights are becoming too cold!

When I drove across the city yesterday I noticed several trees, mostly poplars and gingkos, beginning to display a golden tinge over their leaves.  The oaks are more inclined to look brown.

We don’t usually get the intense autumn foliage colours here as our weather is not cold enough.

This photo was taken a few years ago in the Hawkes Bay, when we were down there on a visit.

I hope everyone is having a happy weekend 😊

Margaret.

  2. Weather warning here for heavy rain and thunder. Rain is much needed as we have still been watering every day but hope it is not severe. Take care.

    1. Yes, I hope it isn't too heavy either as that just causes flooding. What we really need is some prolonged soft rain to soak the soil and get things growing again. Mxx

  3. I’m still waiting on the foliage to change here in Victoria australia
I’m thinking once the equinox is over it will

  5. I know you'll be looking forward to cooler temperatures! I first spotted a Gingko tree in a town nearby last fall...it was so pretty. I think I'll look for one to plant in my own yard and enjoy. Hope the rains aren't too heavy, but just what you need. A gentle Sunday rain here, usually means a nap is in store for me! Mary

    1. Gingkos are one of my favourite trees. I love the shape of their leaves and they turn such a gorgeous butter yellow in autumn :)

    1. We certainly are lucky that we live in a temperate climate and never get to experience the horrible conditions that you have to face.
Sometimes I think one becomes conditioned to the climate they live in - what we describe as hot or cold may not equal what others experience (I have seen African folk wearing thick jumpers on one of our hot days!).
The lower South Island gets much colder than us here, but still does not equal the conditions that some of my Canadian friends have told me about. I think I will remain living in New Zealand! :)

  7. We should have trees changing colour in our hills area soon, it takes a bit longer down here in the city.

  8. We have only had one shower, overnight, so far - looking forward to some more. We have really had the equinox winds here, which can be frustrating - I washed the car last week, and it was covered in dust within 24 hours!!
Never mind, it will be wet and dirty again in no time ... I noticed the trees gaining 'colour' last week on a trip to Rotorua - I am going that way again on Wednesday, and will no doubt see more change.
    Blessings

  9. We've not heard anything about fires this summer - despite your heat have you escaped lightly this year?

    1. The grass may get crisp and brown and crunchy to walk on, but we don't have enough trees around Hamilton here to end up with full-blown forest fires (thankfully). Sometimes we will get scrub fires or grass fires, but they are usually small enough and easy for the fire brigade to control. Mostly, in our area, we have house fires! (we live next to a neighbourhood where there is roughly a house fire every month or so - mostly related to the production of meth).

  10. YES, today Spring started - oh, I so hope I will complain about the weather being too hot, but this will never ever happen over here.

  11. I do love autumn...it is the only time of year I don't complain much. But even then, I am wishing for it to never end. But I always say we are never happy with weather for long...LOL I do love that photo above.

  12. And I didn't even realize that it is Ostara!

Same as I didn't realize that the Full Worm Moon, happened recently.

I am 'falling down on my "Rememberings"! LOL

  13. Happy first day of Autumn to you!! Here of course it is now officially Spring. The weather remains as it has for weeks summed up in a word WET. But hopefully soon we'll get some sunshine.
I'm not sure if I could ever go back to living on the prairies where the temperatures vary from minus 40 to plus 40 over the year. I was always either freezing cold or way too warm. Moving 1500 miles west now we have much milder temps but the price seems to be long months of rain and then summer drought.

  14. I always wondered why Auckland doesn't have many yellow leafy trees in Autumn. Interesting.
