Supermarket Woes

It pays to check your supermarket docket!  This morning I was double charged for one item, and incorrectly charged for another.

I bought peaches and was charged for nectarines, which were dearer, so I questioned it.  But the poor check-out girl couldn’t get the item off the docket as every time she weighed my purchase she got a different weight.  It varied between 705g and 830g – not a good look.

In the end the supervisor offered me cash equal to the estimated difference between the peach and nectarine prices, which I accepted.

A quick check through the docket revealed one item had been charged for twice.  As this was a $7 item, I was glad to have it removed!

The supermarket was extremely busy – many more people packed into the shop than when we are under lock-down restrictions.  One woman I spoke to said people were stocking up on things as we have now had three positive cases confirmed in the community in the last few days.

It must sound strange to countries suffering severe hardship because of Covid, that three cases can send so many people into a panic, but so it is.

However, added to the crowd were undoubtedly shoppers preparing for the long weekend ahead.  Monday is our Auckland Provincial Anniversary Day so everything in the upper half of the North Island will be closing down.

With the hot temperatures we have been having this week, I imagine a lot of families will be heading for the beach!

Stay happy and keep smiling 😊

Margaret.

  1. I hope too many are not headed up here. We will be shopping early on Saturday as usual. Hope it is not too busy then. I know I should check my dockets but rarely do.

  2. I'm glad that you checked. I hope that your area can keep those cases under control.

  3. Every now and then I catch mistakes...both for and against me. If it is very much either way, I bring it to their attention but if it is a few cents, I don't bother. Our small county of 15,000 population has had 1500 cases and 34 deaths. Which is hard to imagine. But I don't know anyone personally in our county that has had it. But I suppose two or three cases seem a lot if you haven't had any.

  4. Glad you checked your docket. I really should do that more often. That's a very tidily packed trolley. I'm heading to Taranaki for the long weekend so am hoping there won't be another lockdown. I was caught on the wrong side of Auckland last time and don't want a repeat of that.

  5. Living on the farm we only went to town for'shopping' about once a monnth (hard to imagine now) and with a grocery receipt as long as your arm Mum used to check off every item when she got it all home. Those were the days before barcodes and the shop assistant had to 'ring up' every item, but at least everything had its price stuck on it. Enjoy you long weekend.

  6. It's good to get into a panic over 3 cases so hopefully you don't end up with 3,000. Not a good time though to shop obviously.
My hubby always keeps a sharp eye out at the checkout. It's amazing how many times a mistake is made. Thank goodness you discovered the double charge

  7. Your government have been so successful in getting on top of cases up until now I'm sure they will manage it again. I hope you enjoy your holiday weekend.

  9. well done for checking, I tend to add up as I go around so I have a good idea of how much it should be, but I don't do a big shop anymore in store, we are now in the once a month big shop being delivered, I don't want to be in a supermarket for any longer than I need to. I do hope your country keeps a lid on the virus, here it is everywhere and it's scary.

  10. I always check before leaving the store. If they make that kind of mistake here, the item is free.

  11. I find it hard to kept track of the cost of items at the check-out when I have to put the items on the belt and bag the groceries. I check the receipt later but it isn’t as easy as checking at the register.

  13. I do believe some markets do it on purpose. Ingo once made the same experience you did and I once even saw: Wrong price and said STOP!. Boy, was the checkout-guy "piss#d", but I made him go and I was right! These days this should not happen anymore (remember the old days when staff had to REMEMBER prices?)

  14. My husband always goes over the grocery receipt. It is amazing how many times we get charged twice for the same item, espceially things like cans of catfood.

  15. I'm another person who checks the receipt before I even leave the store. As David has commented here if an item goes in at the wrong price you get it free ( up to $10). Many's the time I've gotten free food especially the first day of a sale when the computers are not set up properly.

  16. I'm expecting it to be very busy for the next 2 weekends especially with Waitangi Day coming up, people are travelling even with the positive cases in Auckland, it's a worry.

  17. I generally check my dockets and have been known to go back and sort things out!! Generally it's done with good grace -the joys of small town living and being a regular customer... The town will be quiet for the weekend, not that it really affects me much
    Stay safe
    Blessings

  18. I sometimes check receipts but more often watch the screen as things are tallied up and yes, frequently question things.

  19. We heard a rumouring Wellington a couple of weeks ago and so I went and restocked all the 'emergency pantry' items I'd run down since Lockdown. Things like large bags of flour, and yeast, and frozen meats and vegetables. It made for an expensive shop but if we do have another outbreak I won't be putting pressure on the supplies, or needing my son to shop for us. I used to check our till receipt but I've got very slack in the last couple of years. I'll do it next time I have a decent shop, out of interest.

I'm pleased people seem to have bucked up their ideas about contact tracing. If that Auckland case had caused an outbreak tracing it would have been impossible, so few were using the app. I'm afraid I would've had very little sympathy if they had ended up in lockdown again. It's plain laziness not signing in, and in one's own interests to do so!

Stay happy, keep smiling AND CONTACT TRACE!!

  20. Hello,
My hubby always checks the receipts, mistakes are made often enough. The food stores here will be crowded because they are calling for a big snowstorm, everyone runs out to stock up. I would enjoy a hot day at the beach! Take care, enjoy your day!
