I found this photo in my archives and thought it summed up quite nicely what sheep farming in New Zealand used to be like.
My uncle owned a sheep farm and used to have several dogs and always carried a crook with him. He used to ride horses (or walk) to check on the stock around the farm.
Today things are usually done from a farm bike and I haven't seen a crook for a long time.
Have a great day :)
Margaret.
Lovely nostalgic photo.
ReplyDeleteI should imagine any crooks remaining are probably hanging on walls as ornaments. My dad always had a walking stick, which has for years lived in our umbrella stand, it's give me great pleasure to see it there.
ReplyDeleteHello, I love this photo with the sheep and dogs. Wonderful memory of your uncle! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteYou can see a very big crook in the White House - and according to him they have big, fierce dogs too.
ReplyDeleteSo sad I cannot post a pic here!
ReplyDeleteI have a magnet on our fridge showing a man shearing a sheep (oh, I love these animals!) and it says
"Australian men ----- shear genius!"
When we still lived with Hubby´s Granma we used to take evening walks, visiting the neighbourhood sheep and talk with them, "bahhhh", it was so cute!
No such animals here in the city, I miss them.
It is a wonderful reminder of the past...I wish I had been around sheep. Only one family that I know of had sheep where I grew up, and they were not close to any road for me to see and watch.
ReplyDeleteThats a lovely old photo. A peaceful pastoral life!
ReplyDeleteOh I love the old picture. Love sheep and always dreamed of living on a farm with sheep. Gosh, didn't know I had missed so many posts. Just read back to your shopping trip...what a deal on the trousers! And, your first home. That was so sweet. But the pet Chinchilla...was that the kitty cat? Anyhow, enjoyed catching up. New Zealand must be so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe Chinchilla cat is a type of Persian cat, and has gorgeous emerald green eyes. Misty had a really aristocratic personality and was very fussy about what she ate.
DeleteGreat picture of the 'old days'.
ReplyDeleteI loved that photo! I was reminded of a scene from the Disney movie, "Babe", which I used to watch with my daughter, when she was a child; it was a favorite of hers and we watched it over and over again. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a very beautiful photo Margaret! Thank you very much for sharing this to this week's Timeless Thursdays! Just look at the faces of those cute little sheep!!! That crook that the man is holding is what Shepherds are symbolized in my mind especially when I was a kid :)
