This is a continuation of a short
series I am writing about how I am recording my family’s history. Today I show how I record the personal
details of my direct ancestors.
There are many different ways of
recording information, with ancestry.com probably being one of the most
commonly used. I use my own system as I find
that is what personally works for me.
Each family group is given a
designated Family Sheet and I just fill in the sections on it. I use an A4 page with narrow margins.
The footnote is used to create a
reference to the Family Page I am producing (EDWARDS : #112 John and Mary
Brown), with the first name representing the branch of family I am working
with. A page number could also be used
to help keep the right notes together.
It is probably easier to show
than explain the Family Sheet template I use.
I hope this is understandable!
(All the details given here are fictitious).

Before the computer age my Maternal Great Uncle, having made a comfortable life as a ship architect, spent the rest of his life wandering around the UK visiting churches and records offices researching the family tree.
ReplyDeleteAs you say whatever works for us individually. I record each direct ancestor and any children they have and also include any information I obtain on their children, siblings etc. I don't go in search of the 'side-shoots' as I call them, but if any information comes my way I'll include it. I started off with paper, but have now put them on index cards, pink for the female direct ancestors, blue for the male, yellow for second marriages and white for all the side-shoots. They are kept in alphabetical order, the females under their maiden name.
ReplyDeleteHello, you have a great system for recording your family history. The template has some interesting details and I love the photos. Enjoy your day, wishing you a happy new week!
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting...
ReplyDeleteGreat job organizing the information!
ReplyDeleteWhat a mammoth task Margaret - my (paternal) grandfather did some family history, affectionately known as "the pedigree" and it was all hand done - never did really work out his system. My brother has had contact by someone who has done one and it's all on computer, and remarkably accurate.
ReplyDeleteStay safe
Blessings
