What a fantastic weekend we had, three of us ‘girls’ wandering around at our own pace and enjoying each other’s company. We traveled to Taupo on Friday afternoon, arriving fairly late in the afternoon so that evening was a catch-up time (talk, talk, talk, and talk some more!!).
On Saturday morning we headed off to
explore. Our first photo-op was the “Love Taupo” sign on the waterfront.
There was still some autumn colour around.
The weather was kind for us, with no rain, but there was in
icy wind blowing across the Lake from snow-capped Mt Ruapehu.
We saw several different sculptures – I think this one
celebrates the marathon event held here every year which attracts participants
from around the world.
(Addendum: It is actually called the Ironman - an extra long triathlon with running, biking and swimming)
One must-see on any tourist agenda to Taupo is a visit to
Huka Falls, where the Waikato River is forced through a natural narrow chasm. The noise is deafening!
About 200,000 litres of water plunge over the 9 metre rock
face every second – that is enough to fill five Olympic-size swimming pools
every minute.
From a lookout point we could watch the Huka Jet bring
people-who-don’t-mind-getting-wet up to the base of the Falls.
We went out for dinner each night (who wants to cook when
they are on holiday?) and the nicest meal we had was at the Fox And Hounds
restaurant. The staff were friendly but
professional and the food was delicious (the wine was great too!). I had a Lamb Shank on a mash of different
vegetables with a rich gravy. The meat
was perfectly cooked, being melt-in-the-mouth tender but still staying intact
on the bone.
We visited a few other places as well, some not worth mentioning, but two places I want to write separate posts for in the next couple of days. They are the Lava Glass Studio and the Aratiatia Dam.
It was lovely to go away but it is lovely to be home again. No place quite like your own home J
Margaret.
That was a fun potpourri!
ReplyDeleteYes, I really should resume sports...
The waterfall looks gorgeous!!!
Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Glad you had a good time and so did I looking at your photos and reading your blog
ReplyDeleteThank-you :) xx
DeleteLucky you, any trip like yours is not on the cards here, we are not making plans for trips until later in the year and then only for 2021.
ReplyDeleteIt was announced today we will go down to Level One at midnight tonight - life as normal except our borders will remain closed. There are a lot of people dancing in the street tonight!
DeleteYou've quite brought a nostalgic tear to my eye. I've spent many a day in and around Taupo (The Family had a timeshare there apart from anything else) and one Christmas I took the whole family on the Huka Jet. It was fabulous (and wet!). Sigh.......
ReplyDeleteHello, sounds like a great trip, with lots to see and do. That boat ride looks exciting. The dinner looks delicious. Wishing you a happy new week!
ReplyDeleteSeems like you had a fine getaway, just the tonic you needed after the period of isolation.
ReplyDeleteThe meal looks delicious! I love NZ lamb.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely get-away!
Oh that food is making my mouth water, I think I may have just dribbled on my shirt.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have a weekend away with friends, I am ready for that but the world isnt ready, unfortunately.
LOL I hope your shirt is easy to wash :))
DeleteDearest Margaret! Amazing autumn photos but that Lamb Shank is mesmerizing!!! Congratulations to New Zealand for having 0 active cases! Truly a role model for the world!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like such a fun trip! I would love to see Huka Falls and that river...but from a distance like you. I can just imagine the noise. Still, I would totally have enjoyed it. Your meal looks and sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteHow I'd love to see those awesome falls!! It sounds like you had a great time away with some wonderful times to remember. Maybe you'll make it an annual affair.
ReplyDeleteWe're already planning next year, but it will probably be a different destination :)
DeleteI must do a day in Taupo again - love that place, and DH and I went there for weekends when the children were small - we used to joke that we knew all the 'freebies'!
ReplyDeleteStay safe
Blessings
Maxine
