I Bought A Fitbit

 

I am beginning to think that losing weight is a bit like giving up smoking – you have to really want to do it. 

It is all very well saying you would like to slim down or give up tobacco, but it isn’t until you really really want to that the motivation kicks in.

Finally, I have arrived at that point.  I’ve known for ages (like, years) that I need to lose weight but my efforts have always been airy-fairy attempts that result in my giving up before anything is achieved.

This time I am determined it will be different. 

Hence, the purchase of a Fitbit Charge 5.  I researched the different ones, and this one appeared to be the best on offer for the use of Seniors.  It will track my heartbeat, count my steps, and check on my sleep patterns.

It does heaps of other things as well, but those are the ones that are most important to me.

I have been wearing it for a couple of days now and finding my way around how it works.  It’s fun!  And I really love the little message it sends me when it tracks that I haven’t been moving much – “time to move!” is a great message.




After steady rain yesterday, today we have had some sunshine.  It has now (as I am writing this, in the early evening) turned to rain.  It was forecast to arrive twelve hours ago, along with severe thunderstorms, so we will see what the night brings.

Auckland, the  largest city in New Zealand, was declared a State of Emergency last night because of the torrential rain and flooding they experienced.  Rainfall for the 24 hours there (245-400mm depending on where you live, which is nearly10-16 inches), broke all previous records.  

Unfortunately, three people have also died as a result of the weather, and another person is still missing.

Other areas are also experiencing severe rain issues.  Many roads are closed because of flooding or land-slips, and several communities are completely isolated.  It is going to be a big clean-up.

  1. I often find that my desire and my determination are at odds. It is always an internal struggle to follow through. Sounds like you have a good start!

  2. I started with a basic fitbit years ago. And now I’ve got an Apple Watch They’re very clever little devices
    And yes they do make you get up and move more.
    Hopefully you won’t get more rain than you need. We had so much flooding during the start of our summer.

  3. I have a Fitbit and have found it useful for motivation to move, especially if you want to beat yesterday's number of steps.

  4. The sun didn't make it out here today, and we have had intermittent rain all day... great weather for card making. I am on my own this weekend as the family are away over Tauranga way, and they too are confined to indoor activities...
    I think your watch is fabulous - mine even tells me to breathe at times - they are quite fun, as you are finding out

    2. The family were fine, thanks Margaret, and had a good trip home, via the Kaimai's. They travelled mid/late afternoon and it had been opened, but they did comment on the slips they saw, and the water over the road at one point.

  5. Good luck with your determination - that will be the key even more than the fitbit. F bought Mr B one of those when he last had a 'determination'. The determination expired before the watch diid and a week later he wasn't wearing the watch. Xxx Mr T

  6. Smoking, yes. Went into Ingo´s room to give him a little kiss. Found him in minus grades at the openn window smoking. So much for promises of giving it up.

    I started with a fitbit,then went on to POLAR, which again and again lost contact to internet, hence I ran around with summer-time till shortly ago and now I decided to give up on these things (do I? It is motivation after all!).

    Oh, I hate the time-to-move-message when I work!!! Really, now that you mention that...
    I loved the "you´ve reached your goal"-message, though (and I topped nearly always anyways).
    Now week 6 being sick, but plan is to get back to training Monday.

    Your weather is scary. Yes, be safe ... everywhere...

  7. I got a watch, just a cheapy from China, but I love it. It shows me how many kms I've walked, steps done. Shows calories too but I don't count those things anymore. Helps me walk a few more metres every day.
    You can lose weight at any age! Go for it. After a lifetime of yo-yoing at age 67 I started again and 3 years later, at 70! I've lost 34 kilos.
    Those floods in Auckland are incredible. Will the weather ever get back to normal?

  8. I remember a couple of years back you resolved to lose weight and planned a diet regimen, created a journal if my memory serves me well, and resolved to report the results on your blog. I am assuming that attempt was not quite achieved! Good luck this time around. Breaking bad habits is never easy.

    1. You are so right David. I started off with those good intentions but it was so easy to give up (and make all the "right" excuses about it). My motivation this time is much stronger :)

  10. I think you'll really like your Fitbit! I've had one a couple of years, and now I'm hooked. It took me awhile to find the face that I liked best and gave me the info I wanted - large enough to read! I also use the alarm and timer all the time. I hope the weather turns better for your area...Mother Nature can really cause such issues and
    safety worries. Stay safe, Mary

  11. I can't even imagine 10 to 16 inches of rain. Pretty scary. I hope your storm didn't drench you.
    I wish you very good luck losing weight and getting more fit. Both are harder to do as one gets older but not impossible. Keep safe...and dry. Granny Marigold

I, too, have a Fitbit Charge 5 which I bought for my exercise regime and, more importantly, analysing my sleep patterns because I used to sleep the sleep of the dead but now find my sleep more fitful and I've been trying to find out why. I've always been thin so my wight isn't a concern but as I've got into my later 70s, although I do a great deal apparently a lot of my exercise had been the 'wrong' exercise from the point of view of balance and aged bodies in general. I now go to a Move More class and they give me the exercises I need. That was something I did appreciate at the 'One to One' gym I used to go to in Napier. Sorry that was a bit of a ramble!

  16. I am wondering what the motivation is...I really need to lose weight, too. I think...no, I know I would feel so much better. Carrying all this extra weight is so tiring. My phone will keep track of my steps, but I have to stop and get it out and actually take my heart rate, stress level, oxygen level. The only thing, it is starting to bother my hip because I carry it in my back pocket a lot of the time. Then, there are times I leave it laying so it does not count my steps.

    I know getting out and walking would do wonders for me, but I don't do it for various reasons. EVen walking inside would be good but this house is just too small for that. IF we ever get moved to my daughter's house, maybe I can do something.

    1. The best of motivations! The hospital is hounding me to take medications that I don't want. This is my only alternative :(
