There are certain foods that I adore eating but that only
ever appear in the supermarkets for a very short time, usually at a high cost.
Food like New Zealand whitebait, scallops, asparagus, tamarillos,
feijoas, local grapes, cherries, and passionfruit.
It is one of my little luxuries to treat myself to one
purchase each season if I can manage it.
At the moment there are cherries for sale. Yummy deep-red delicious meaty cherries.
Last week they were selling for $15 for 700g, this week the
price is down to $10. Yes! I will have some of those.
I was at the supermarket just after lunch and it was
surprisingly busy. I thought a snack of cherries for afternoon tea would be perfect, although I confess to nibbling a couple after I came home!
The afternoon here is cloudy with a balmy breeze. Son is watching the ASB Classic (tennis) on TV,
and I’m about to bring in the washing off the line – and then it will be Cherry
Time!
Have a great day 😊
Margaret.
Happy cherry time! Those cherries don't grow here, as far as I know. We get them imported from South Africa and to be honest, they don't taste anything except water! Not what I'm used to from Norway, where we get them sweet and yummy. Enjoy the cherry season! We have a cherry tree in our garden, it gives small red/pinkish cherries, another variety.
ReplyDeleteI'm like you, I don't buy them when they are expensive, it's the same with nectarines and rock melons, as much as I love them, I can do without if I have to, happy new year.
ReplyDeleteI was in Countdown this afternoon and 800g was $23.00. I didn't buy any even though they are a favourite. Actually, I have a few left from some bought last week. I can't remember what I paid but know I was pleasantly surprised
ReplyDeleteCherries are wonderful!! I think they're my favourite fruit. Do they grow in NZ or are they imported?
ReplyDeleteThey grow in New Zealand :)
DeleteOh!!!! My parents had two cherry-trees. One with such dark ones like in your pic - you went onto the balcony and just grabbed one (or two, three...)
ReplyDeleteand one with more "yellow" ones, also very yummy!
Sweet times!
Sadly the trees were old and my Brother had to tear them down. I think I cried a little (he sent me pics cause he was so proud of how they did it... men, huh).
Ingo´s Mother once ate a whole bucket of them in one session and let me tell you... don´t do that...
To Cherry Time... oh, it will be only 8 months... enjoy yours xx
LOL eating that many cherries sounds like the experience I had after eating too many apples one day :))
DeleteI love them but rarely buy as they never taste as good as the ones we used to pick and eat from a tree at the smallholding - seems they take too long to get into the shops
ReplyDeleteNothing, absolutely nothing, beats the taste of ripe fruit (any kind!) picked straight from the tree (especially on a sunny day when the juice seems to explode from them)
DeleteSo much better to buy produce when it's in season. So much more taste and cheaper. Thank goodness we don't often find fruit and veg out of season and just don't buy it. Oh and local produce is tastier too. The blackberries I saw in the supermarket at Xmas were ridiculous. Outrageous price, a kilo of gold for a few grams and I've never seen them on sale here before or even heard of them growing in Greece.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your cherries!
We enjoy cherries and they are always expensive, sometimes less expensive at times than at other times, but never a bargain. We buy them, nevertheless, and feel quite decadent as we polish off ten bucks worth of cherries in a single sitting!
ReplyDeleteOne of the things that makes life worth living :)
DeleteSuch a beautiful time of year when the fruit trees are bearing their juicy deliciousness! “Enjoy,” she said enviously!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your cherry time!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGood for you...it's always wonderful to treat ourselves to those long-awaited fruits & veggies. For me, it's a "real" tomato in the summertime...not the tasteless ones that are in the grocery now. Enjoy them, and ahhh, laundry on the clothesline, how wonderful!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. We are picking the first of our tomatoes now and the taste is incredible :)
DeleteCherries are delicious! They are my favouritest fruits. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately there are no fruits 'in season' here from October through June. The latest fruits are pears and apples in October and the earliest is rhubarb, not really a fruit, in June. Sadly everthing has to be imported from somewhere a lot warmer than here during those months.
ReplyDeleteI would love know how many cherries I have picked...it would be a LOT. The orchard I worked for had a few trees in addition to the apple trees. I could eat a quart of them if I had them!
