I am house sitting for a few days, caring for my little
friend Rusty while his owners are away. Apart
from the rain and a clock ticking, it is very quiet here this morning.
I have just read the news and there are weather warnings out
for several places in the top of the North Island for severe gale force winds
and torrential rain.
It seems likely that we will receive some of it as well but
I don’t imagine it will be too bad here.
I was rudely awoken yesterday morning at around 5.45am with
my bed shaking badly and a loud roaring noise.
It took me a moment to waken properly and realise it was an earthquake!
This one was about 50km (25miles) away from us – a 5.1 (on
the Richter scale) at a shallow depth of 7km near Te Aroha. The biggest quake I have actually felt for
some years.
The cats were unperturbed and nothing was damaged, but it
was the end of sleep for both Son and I.
Have a great day everyone 😊
Margaret.
Heard about the earthquake. It sounds nasty (having never experienced one).
ReplyDeleteAww I do like that photograph, so sweet.
ReplyDeleteIt must be scary to be woken by an earthquake, pleased you are ok and nothing was damaged.
All the best Jan
Earthquakes sound so scary. I guess one gets accustomed to them…hope there’s no more for a long time, Margaret.
ReplyDeleteI've never experienced an earthquake. Tornadoes, yes, those are terrifying enough for me.
ReplyDeleteThe very thought of tornadoes frightens me. I guess growing up with the ground shaking at intervals means I prepare for but are not frightened of earthquakes. I've had no experience with tornadoes at all (and hope I never do!).
DeleteGlad you are OK and nothing damaged. Earthquakes happen here too (out in the sea), but very rare. Good thing we don't have tornados here, but this time of the year (until May), is the cyclone (hurricane) season.
ReplyDeleteA hurricane sounds as bad as, and just as frightening, as a tornado! Stay safe :)
DeleteAlthough we've had more than a few earthquakes here on the coast, they have not caused us any damage.
ReplyDeleteI think if we had a 5.1 we wouldn't be quite so nonchalant! I'm glad you're okay.
It's a long time since Ive felt an earthquake thank goodness but remember big ones from NZ and Athens. That was a big shake you got. So unexpected, rather frightening. Hope you don't get any more.
ReplyDeleteGlad you suffered no damage in the shake, but Rusty looks a bit cautious of the world. How did he take it.
ReplyDeleteHe slept through it - but a bit of rain on the roof (or, worse, thunder or a hot air balloon) will have him shaking like a leaf. He also hates having his photo taken LOL, funny little dog :)
DeleteGoodness me, how scary, we don't get anything like that here.
ReplyDeleteCute guy to take care of!
ReplyDeleteBut what?! An earthquake - scary. Glad it was far from you, but, oh...
You gave me a hint, btw. The hate against rescuers might be jealousy!
I added that, in case you wanna check - I hope it´s OK - I said you gave me the thought... -we are a community?
Otherwise let me know and I take it out. But it makes sense - thank you!
I think I could not live in your place. Earthquakes.
I have all the pictures in front of my eyes. Your country, Fukushima...
Germany might be very boring, nature-wise, but I feel safe that way... to quiet times xx
It's okay Iris :)
DeleteGlad that the earthquake wasn't more severe. An earthquake is something I have never experienced and with luck, never will!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute dog! Glad you didn't have damage from the earthquake:)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the earth doesn't move up this way, Margaret. I probably wouldn't sleep for a week, despite the fact that I've slept through a cyclone. Rusty is a little cutie, isn't he?
ReplyDeleteI have felt one earhquake and the aftershock...that was enough for me, even though it was not very strong. I hope you don't have another, and hope we don't either.
