My Sitting Room

What name do you give a room that doesn’t really have a name?

Most of the rooms in our house are named after their function, such as the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom etc.

But what name do you give a multi-purpose room that has no clear function?

I have taken over grand-daughter’s old bedroom and have been working on developing a room for myself, somewhere I can sew or read or iron or take an afternoon nap.

Mittens often keeps me company when I am pottering in this room

I began calling it my Craft Room, but it seemed that the room was more than that as I seldom do much in the way of craft work.

It is not my Bedroom, and we already have a Living Room (part of the open-plan kitchen – dining – tv area) and a Lounge (the sunken area next to the Living Room, where son has based his Office area).

Then we thought about Sitting Room.  After all, I do do a lot of SITTING in there!

The room contains a recliner lounge chair, a bookcase, storage drawers and shelves, and will eventually have a table as well.  Most of the day the sun shines into the room and it really is a very pleasant place to be.

So, it looks like this house now has a Sitting Room – set aside for the use of the Grand Old Dame who resides here! 😊

Be happy,

Margaret.

  1. Wouldn't the French call that your boudoir? (Possibly not appropriate as it's literal translation is the sulking room - essentially the exclusive room of the women). Retiring room perhaps?

  2. PS Tigger sends greeting to the very reclined Mittens. Perhaps it is her boudoir.

  4. Ah, your own sitting room. Sounds like such bliss. Hope you get to lay down on the sofa, with the sun streaming in on you, as you nap. Thank you for all of the kind comments that you've left on my blog xxxxx

  6. What a fabulous spot Margaret - and Mittens obviously approves!! isn't it lovely to have extra space - when I move into DD's extension, it is already being called the Queen's Suite :)

  7. We had a spare bedroom where we put everything that didn't have a place elsewhere. We figured we could do better with it and we made it into a great little nook for Miriam and she simply calls in "My room"! Seems like as good a name as any.

  8. I would love to have a sitting room. I d have a sewing room, though and am very thankful for that. I have always wished I had a little cabin to call my very own...where I could have a fireplace or a small wood burning stove..

    1. My daughter has a little cabin for her office, nestled under the trees. Such a peaceful place - she calls it her She-Shed :)

  9. That sounds lovely! Everyone needs a little spot to call their own...the other rooms are shared, but here's a room you can decorate as you like and have your favorite books, music, or sewing/crafting. Perfect!

  10. Enjoy sitting in your sitting room. We have a room like that. No name but with sofa, computer and the ironing board. I call it the apothiki, storeroom. Unfortunately it's where a lot of 'rubbish' ends up.

  12. It sounds an ideal place for you and Mittens to relax. Not sure who the Grand Old Dame could be though. You are far too young for that title.

  14. Hi Margaret, your sitting room sounds lovely, a special place for yourself to enjoy. I too have a sitting room where I keep my collection of books, a sewing machine and piano. I keep it electronic gadget-free...no tv, computer or phone in there. Just a place for me to relax with my cat Otto. It is also Otto's room with his cat scratching tree and his basket to curl up in. Hugs, Rose x

  15. I think Sitting Room sounds very grandiose. Only a truly grand lady has a room for sitting, regardless of who sits there. Make the most of it, Margaret.
