A Load Of Rubbish

Our local council is introducing a new rubbish collection system, to come into effect in a couple of day’s time.  Today was our last day for the old collection system.  The black plastic bags are being replaced with two wheelie bins (one for recyclables and the other for pure rubbish) and a small bin for compost scraps.  The current blue recycle bin will then be used solely for the collecting of unbroken glass.

This was the sight at our road gate this morning – and it is not all our rubbish!  This is from four households.

We had a little sunshine during the morning but this afternoon has been filled with squally showers.  The sort of weather that makes the cats dislike going outdoors – they sit at the cat door looking out, with a decided frown on their face, before finally making a dash for it.

I overdid it in the garden department yesterday and have been rather sore today, so the bit of rain made a good excuse not to do too much.

Japonica always reminds me of my maternal grandmother as she always had a plant growing in her garden.

Stay happy 😊

Margaret

  1. Those blue recycle bins! There is one on our back balcony here in Greece - 2 of them came to Europe with me (from Dunedin) 26 years ago with all my china packed in them. Mr B now has one in the garage in Havant will all the polishes and degreasers and stuff in it. This one has made a second move and is being used to store bike related stuff. I guess they will ultimately return to NZ with us!
Japonica has always seemed an old-fashioned plant to me. There always seemed to be a few around the oldest houses, settler cottages and early farmsteads (houses turned into sheds, but the japonica hung on). It wasn't until I was in UK that one of my colleagues presented me with a japonica apple that was actually bigger than a walnut - his were huge and he had no idea what they were. Having identified it for him he offered my loads of tennisball sized fruit which I promptly made into the most wonderful jelly. It has a real tart zing to it and sets like a dream.

  2. We were due to go to wheelie bins, but our council deferred it 12 months due to Covid, and keeping costs down. Then it will be similar to your new system. Loving that Japonica, it's such a pretty flower
    Stay safe

  3. Hello,
Hubby and I are happy to recycle and separate our trash. It is nice to have the trash cans on wheels. The blossoms looks beautiful. Take care, enjoy your day!

  4. By careful planning and being very judicious about what we buy we have reduced our garbage to almost zero. We recycle very diligently, but sadly most of what we set out for recycling is never recycled. Only 8-15% of recycling is actually recycled. There is simply not the industrial capacity to recycle more. Much of it makes its way to the landfill and some is shipped overseas. We are killing the oceans with human trash. A friend of mine based in Hong Kong was on a scientific expedition to Antarctic recently and there was plastic debris everywhere and on the journey through the open oceans plastics were constantly bobbing on the surface. Oh what an enlightened species we are.

  5. We have that system here. Took getting used to bet it works well.

Our weather has turned cold and the wind is high. A change of season is in the air.

  6. First of all, I wish my dear Margaret is feeling better now from your sores, it's is good that it rained so it spared you watering time (Now that I started gardening, that is also the first thing I think about when it starts to pour!) Though I still visit my garden in the rain because I love seeing them under such weather! My bromeliads love the rain! That Japonica flowers look gorgeous! Does remind me so much of Japan through its name.

  7. I wish our town had a place to recycle things. Not that I have a super lot. But still, every time I throw something plastic away, I think about it going in the landfill.

  8. It's so easy to overdo it ... hope your back is feeling a little better now.

    The japonica is lovely.

    All the best Jan

  9. The small bin for compost scraps is interesting. We still have bags here although a lot of people, including us, have a wheelie bin instead. Easier to handle and, as we put our rubbish out the previous afternoon stops dogs getting at the rubbish. We have always had a wine coloured bin for recyclables but recently got a blue one like yours which is for glass and the other is now for plastics and tin cans. Paper gets bundled up separately. Our compost scraps go to the worm farm

  10. Having lived for so long so far from town where there was no rubbish collection, I've learnt how to reduce waste and therefore cut down on trips to the dump. Having rubbish collection is one of my new luxuries of living in town. Our council has wheelie bins in some areas and not in others, they haven't reached here yet. Hope the gardening stiffness doesn't last long.
