As many of you know, last year I finished working on my
Family History story.
For the last fifty years (my goodness!) I have been
gathering information about my children’s ancestors, and finally got it all put
together (with sources) and a copy given to each of my children.
It was a mammoth task and I decided it was time to end my
research.
However, my children keep telling me that I need to publish
it, so others can also benefit from my work.
The cost of doing this is prohibitive, so I’ve not really felt like that
was an option.
There are other family members who also do research, and I have
been aware that most of them use ancestry.com as their go-to place to build
their trees – mine has all been done on my computer, using Word but no other
programme.
Yesterday I visited a sister-in-law who loves her genealogy
hobby, and she got me interested in looking at ancestry.com and what it could
do for me.
I thought about it overnight, and today I am going to
subscribe and begin transferring my information into that format. What a great way to publish my Family History
so that a wider audience can access it.

I’m happy to report that we have been in touch with all our
family and friends in areas so stricken by Cyclone Gabrielle. The devastation has been terrible, but it has
been a relief for us to know people are safe. It
is going to take some time to rebuild again.

Well done on taking that step Margaret! I am sure others will appreciate your work. I still have not had contact from family in Gisborne or a friend on a farm over that way... the waiting is difficult.

That is a worry Maxine. I know they are trying to get phones and power up and going again, but it all takes time (and it seems such a long time sometimes). We can only trust that they are doing okay. Hugz, Mxx

ReplyDeleteI'm very glad that I have a sister who delves into our ancestry because I wouldn't know where to start. Good to know your friends and family are okay although I'm sure there's a lot of clean-up to be done. GM

ReplyDeleteThank goodness your friends and family are OK. The pictures we've seen over here are really terrible, with the earthquake in Turkey and Cyclone there - so many people affected all round the world

I would be happy finding such pictures. Sadly we have near to nothing, darn war that.

I'm glad all your family are safe, Margaret. This is a very hard time for many, I really feel for those down the coast. I'm glad you've joined Ancestry. It opened up another world of family history for me. Pauline
ReplyDeleteWhat an accomplishment - and what a wonderful thing to hand down and share with your family! I've been working on my family tree for ages...I use Ancestry and Family Search. Sometimes I question the correctness of it (last week I found my line leading to King Arthur; really?!) And I simply cannot find someone as close as my great grandmother who died in childbirth in 1901...absolutely no record anywhere, so frustrating. I lived with my grandmother until I was 10 - it was her mom, and I so want to find the details...if only I'd asked questions when I was younger, but then at age 10, I guess I wasn't much interested in such things.

I believe the Victorians used to love fabricating family histories that led them to someone famous (or back to Adam and Eve). That is why I like to fact check everything. Perhaps your great grandmother is listed under a miss-spelt name? I hope you manage to find her.
DeleteThis sounds fantastic, Margaret. Our descendants really do want to know their family line. I have 1 grand daughter who loves researching it all. A couple of skeletons do come out of the woodwork here and there.... You can publish on amazon. It costs nothing, and you can do kindle or book, or both. I recommend asking your local library for a copy of The Chic Author by Fiona Ferris (she has a blog: Howtobechic.com), a New Zealand author. It's very helpful. You can look it up on amazon.com. Plus youtube has tutorials using word, or google, to write books. Glad to hear that your friends and family are ok. xxxxxxxx Such a tragedy in this country.

DeleteHaving done all that work and pulled the information together it would be a shame for it to fade again so good on you for making it accessible. F has cousins who a passionate about such pursuits and had patched together extensive trees even in pre internet days.
