Cup of Tea Anyone?

On the edge of Hamilton there is a tea estate, the only place in New Zealand that produces tea on a commercial basis.

Tea is not something that you would expect to grow in New Zealand, but here at Zeelong Tea Estate there are over 1.2 million Camellia sinensis shrubs producing up to three crops of tea leaves each year.

I enjoyed my visit to their retail shop and came away with a tea caddy of organic whole-leaf Oolong tea – which I have yet to taste!

I see they do estate tours as well as running a restaurant and function centre, and I enjoyed their garden art surrounding the carpark.

It is a place I would like to visit again and explore a bit more closely.

I much prefer drinking tea to coffee.  Do you have any preferences?

Stay happy 😊

Margaret.

  1. I switched out coffee to tea for breakfast this morning. I like both really. I would enjoy a visit there too, Margaret.

  2. Never knew or imagined tea might grown in NZ - but then its a relative of camellias and they do well so why not? There are probably varieties that will do well in NZ, I'm just amazed that someone thought about it. I hope that you enjoy your oolong. I love tea (all black tea varieties, not keen on green) but it doesn't love me and sets off some reaction in my mouth, so these days it is coffee or plain water. xxx F

  8. Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon! I am hopeless at making coffee, it's always too strong or too eatery, but I'm good at making tea.

  9. I used to drink more tea than I do these days. Not too sure why but I'm enjoying my coffee more than ever. I like that row of oversized teapots. Cute.

  10. I'm a coffee drinker but really enjoyed the tea I had when my friend and I splashed out on High Tea at the estate about a year ago. I think it was called Fire and Ice. Something like that. I'm looking forward to one day returning to do one of their tours. It was raining the day we were there, I'd like to take more photos, too.

  11. What a neat place. I like the tea pots and cups. I have always wanted to be a tea drinker but just can't get it to taste like I think it should. :) I do LOVE my big mug of coffee first thing every morning. I sip on it up until lunch time. It seem to get better as the day goes on.

  12. Never heard of tea growing in NZ! That's interesting! There are three main tea manufacturers here (coffee too). Occasionally I drink tea, but I prefer COFFEE (no instant!).

  14. I hear their tours are wonderful Margaret - they are done in a bus.
I like my tea weak and black - but coffee is pretty much anyway, anytime, although I am finding 'genuine' coffee is now starting to play havoc with me :(
    Stay safe

  15. Love the art! And tea!
Today I was in for a cup of coffee as we waited for someone in the city. Ingo went inside, took a while, he came back without. "Corinna", blogpost eventually to come, the craziness never ends (and maybe some don´t wanna read about it anymore).

  16. Well that's something I didn't know, tea estates here in NZ. I don't mind either tea or coffee, depends on what sort of mood I'm in.
