R.I.P. Prince Philip

A good part of today has been spent watching the replay of the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral in London.  It played here live in the wee hours of this morning, so I was happy that it was replayed during the day.

I think Prince Philip would have approved of his funeral service (he planned most of it himself, although it had to be scaled down because of Covid regulations).  It was simple, dignified, and honoured a man who had devoted his life to serving his Queen and country.

Only 30 people were allowed to be present at the funeral, but in a way that made it more private and family-like instead of a huge state affair with hundreds of people present.

For me, it made it more personal and I found I could sympathize more with The Queen and her family in their time of sorrow.

Losing a loved one, whatever the circumstances, is always difficult.

Margaret.

  1. I watched on tv yesterday afternoon and I think
His funerals were like the man he was simple and dignified.
Not much filming of the Queen in respect of her sorrow.

    1. I thought the filming was done with discretion and respect - it was nice to see.

  2. Losing a loved one and it being such a public affair must be even worse. There is a private side to even the most public of figures. The poor Queen can't put her grief on display even at a small personal funeral.

    1. I sometimes think it must be very hard for them, having to be so public when dealing with private matters.

  3. I agree with you, it was a family time, and for once they could be just like the rest of us and greave together in private. I do wish our media would stop with the riff between William and Harry, if there is any problem, it's between them, and stop speculating.

    1. I wish they would stop their speculating too, it doesn't help anybody at all.

  4. I do feel for them that even the most private thing has to be public.

  5. I didn't get to see it. I'm sure it was fitting for the man and these times.

    1. It was. It had a poignancy that is often missing from state funerals.

  6. It was lovely...

I watched, and did a post on it.

    I was very, very impressed.

  7. I watched a bit on BBC news. Love the pomp and ceremony, the carriage waiting there with his gloves on the seat. The English do it well

    1. Haha, they've had centuries to practice their technique! :))
But I love the pomp and ceremony as well - all that red and gold. The Dean of Windsor had so much spun-gold embroidery on his gown that it must have been really heavy.

  8. Amazing sound in that church! The image of the queen looking small and alone in that seat says it all about grief.

  9. I caught the last third of the service and found it very moving and beautiful. Bagpipes move me to tears at best of time.

  10. I saw most of it. Was preparing a casserole so listened and went to watch every so often. A fitting tribute.

  12. He was a sweet man, full of humor and sensitive, of what I saw of him in the news. Humble comes to mind, also.
He was in our news non-stop, too, everybody loved him, it seems.
I saw one pic on FB where he was dressed as one of the service guys (how do you call them?). It was the wedding day and the Queen had to walk straight on but laughed. Sweet pic!
    Sad he´s gone.

  13. I watched the service live, and recorded the part before the service, so watched that first bit later in the evening. The Queen looked very lonely all by herself. A very moving service. And those four choristers... WOW! Such voices.

  14. Yes RIP. I watched a documentary recently about him and his mother who was a nun and had a very interesting life out of the public eye.

  15. Rest in peace to Prince Philip. Just as he wanted it.

  16. In some ways, from what I understand of Prince Phillip, he would have appreciated the small funeral.... pity it was enforced by covid though. Oh how I felt for the Queen!!
    Stay safe
    Blessings
