Enjoying Twilight

I sat outside last night and watched the skies as dusk fell.  As the pale blue sky gradually turned grey, the clouds were lit up with a delicate shade of blush pink – a perfect way to kiss the old day goodbye.

As the light lowered still more, the clouds faded back into a grey oblivion and the odd bright star could be picked out.

The solar lights around the garden all came on, one at a time.  I especially love the coloured ones, and a favourite one of mine is the light that changes colours.

The fairy lights hung up around the carport are also solar powered and they flicked on as well, creating a soft colourful glow.

Here in the city, there is always light pollution, but I remember once sitting on the beach, with absolutely no electrical lighting around, and watching as dusk fell.  The results were truly magical and it was amazing how well the eyes adapted to the fading light.

Son went for an evening walk down through our gully and came home to say there were so many cicadas singing in the trees that they made his ears hurt!

It is still too hot at nights to sleep properly, so the fan remains on for most of the time.  If I dare open the windows (I won’t sleep with them open) I get inundated with moths and beetles.

They aren’t too bad, I suppose, but I always feel sad when one gets fried to a crisp in the bedside light (it smells awful too).

I miss the fly screens we had on all our windows when we lived in the caravan.

Be happy 😊

Margaret.

  1. How wonderful to think of warm nights when you can sit outside as dusk falls!

  2. What a lovely post, Margaret. Sort of soft and nostalgic. How did you manage that? I like my garden lights, too, especially now I'm living in town and the sky is not as bright at night.

    2. Sorry to interject but the idea of Pauline living in 'town' amused me but I suppose everything is relative.

  3. We wouldn’t be able to live in our home without window screens. Everyone here has them.

We lived in a mobile home when we first married. We had it for ten years.

  4. Cicadas are like a true sign of Summer I think and I can't wait for Summer to be over, we've had our bedroom ceiling fan on more nights than I can count.

  5. Yes. I remember the Outback in Australia. The perfect sky, no light- or whatever pollution. The Southern Cross, the Milky Way. Beautiful, I miss it and likely won´t see it again (sick husband, hospital needs to be near).
You made me laugh with "(it smells awful too)", ewww. BUGS!

  6. Twilight is the most lovely time....

Your home does not have screens on the windows, I take it.

We have window screens and door screens. I can not stand flying insects, especially since the stinging ones, LOVE me.

    1. Most homes here do not have screens, and the places that do usually only have them on a few windows. We don't have any toxic bugs or critters to worry about, thankfully.

  7. I love sitting out on the porch in pleasant weather and watch day turn into night. It will be a few months though until that happens. I don't like bugs and sure appreciate screens on our windows. I did see a spider on my bedside table just now. I hope it doesn't decide to crawl on me at night :(

    1. Ugh! You would be able to hear me if I woke and found a spider crawling on me!! :))

  8. I can feel the heat coming from your post as I sit here on one of the coldest mornings so far this winter, it is snowing, very fine snow, the ground is not white, but corners are filling up.

  9. I am a little surprised that you don't have screens on your windows. It is a standard feature on houses here, so you can have fresh air wafting in without the bugs gaining entry.

  10. I had some velcroed screens in The Cottage ranch sliders but I didn't like leaving them open at night give all the animals wandering around.

  11. Love your beautiful descriptions, Margaret - so eloquent and I could "see" as I rode. Fantastic. Last year, a cricket cam to stay inside. It was so loud! Turned out I had a whole colony living inside my house......

    1. They can be so hard to find inside, even though they are so loud. Not that keen on crickets! :)

  12. I love sitting out at night when the day fades away. I like my solar lights I love seeing them out the window even in the winter. We have window screens...but even so we have tiny biting bugs that will come through the screens in the summer. :)

  13. I sleep with a window ajar, but curtains over it, so I don't get bugs coming in... there was a cricket inside when I was babysitting last week - young Mr 8 yr old was up on the couch and saying "Get rid of it - it's coming for me!" Thankfully I am not squeamish when it comes to bugs and things - the last few years of DH's life I had to deal with White Tails and all as he could not see to get them....
    Stay safe

    1. The first time I came across a White Tail, I think I must have emptied a whole can of fly spray on to it! I'm not so bad now, I can squash them instead :)

  14. Hello,
I love the lights at night, they look so pretty twinkling. The screens are necessary here, especially in the summer when we have the mosquitoes. Take care, enjoy your day and week ahead!

  15. I keep thinking one of these days that I am going to drive out to an area away from the city...just to be out at night but by the end of the day, I am just ready to stay home. But your words make me want to go so bad.

  16. Here in Canada we have hot summers with lots of bugs, mosquitoes, flying whatnots, and all windows have screens to keep flying visitors out! So I can sleep happily with the windows open.

  17. It's supposed to be winter here but I've got the AC on. We had it off for just a few days last week. I can't sleep either when it's too hot.
