The Dreaded Sniffles

Oh no!  How did that happen?  How does one get The Sniffles in lock-down?

It began with A Sneeze and quickly turned to successive sneezes, bunged nose, gritty weepy eyes, a cough and headache, and a bit of chest discomfit.

A perfectly Normal Cold to go with the change of seasons and usually I wouldn’t think very much of it.  But it has been five weeks since I last set foot off our property.  I’ve not even been for a walk down the street, and both son and grand-daughter are healthy.

So how did I “catch” this thing?

Not that it matters, really.  Having a cold is quite common, yet somehow it now makes me feel slightly guilty, like I have been doing something dreadfully wrong.

I know that if I was out in the community people would be looking askance at me – probably cross the road even! – whereas before nobody would have taken any notice.

How times change.

Today my Sniffles are much improved and I went for a short wander around the garden and photographed these flowers.  Colour cheers up even the dullest of days.

Be happy J
Margaret.

  1. Could this be from allergies? My daughter used to become a mess at times with allergies. As for people crossing the street now if people met you...I hate to think what it is going to be like for my husband. She has a chronic cough he has had for over 15 years...been to multiple drs and tried multiple things to control and nothing works.

    1. I never thought about allergies! One of my sons used to get hay fever - I never used to, but I believe that can change.

  3. Sorry to hear you haven't been well. Do son and DIL go out at all? Perhaps they brought it home as carriers?

    1. No DIL. Son goes to supermarket weekly but he has been fine. Grand-daughter and I have been stuck at home now for five weeks. We had had some wind so now I am wondering if perhaps it was pollen that upset me.

  5. Oh Margaret, I am totally with you with what you feel, except that I am a very anxious worrier to the highest levels :( It's been 5 weeks now since I last went outside the streets as well and I have been feeling colds and fevering feelings (but checked on thermometer which says always less than 37C so thanks God) but also discomfort breathing these past few days. But one thing I am holding on to is that they do not persist and change to another pain which I have least heard of or read so hopefully it's just my anxiety. And also just like you, i have decided to take on a bigger project than my pocket gardening and really fix and beautify our garden on the terrace yesterday. It's going to be a big project but I was able to repot a lot of bromeliad "pups" into new pots and it took me 4 hours in the garden and I can say my feelings and the things I have been feeling have improved the most compared in the past weeks. I know worrying will not do me any good but I don;t know sometimes I just can;t stop my mind of it which even causes me to feel the pains physically.

Oh sorry Margaret I talked too much haha I'm just quite relieved that I am not alone through your post. And I hope that you are on your better days as soon as possible! May the colorful blooms be medicine for you :)

    1. I believe anxiety can make you feel like that, so pottering with plants is an excellent thing to do. Sometimes, when thoughts keep going round in your mind, it helps to simply write them all down. Then show them to God in prayer and give them to Him. Next, destroy the piece of paper and know that God will take care of everything. It is a simple remedy to follow whenever thoughts and worries start making you feel upset, and you can do it as often as you like.
Enjoy your garden, even if you are just sitting out among the plants :) xx

  6. oh no, I hope you get better, I usually get hayfever terribly the whole year round. Working retail I was finding I was getting sick all the time, a cousin suggested taking buccaline berna every 3 months which I order online, which is kind of an oral flu vaccine, it has made a huge difference, I probably get a mild flu once a year now, better than once a week like I use to.

    1. I'm glad you found something to help you Amy. I'm not sure if I've had a cold, hay fever or an allergic reaction to something. I'm feeling lots better this evening, so whatever I had it was short and sharp.

  7. I am not sure how long the cold virus can be inactive in your system before manifesting itself, but I am glad in any event that it seems to have been short lived.

  9. Glad you're feeling better. I've been wearing a mask and gloves and going to the grocery store, when we need groceries. I've been very careful but still worry. The pollen this spring has bothered my husband a lot. Your flowers are so pretty. That would cheer me up too.

  13. Good news that your cold ( or allergies) are disappearing and you are on the mend. I agree that one hardly wants to sneeze or clear one's throat these days with all the fear that is everywhere.
Your flowers are gorgeous, especially that Begonia(?).

    1. The fifth picture down is a Tuberous Begonia. These ones have taken forever to come into flower - but maybe they never got enough water during summer!
